Making a choice about which timber to use is crucial when manufacturing outdoor furniture. There are very few woods that are genuinely suited to outdoor use. Not only is the correct timber important, but the source and the quality of the wood are major factors in determining the overall look, quality and feel of the furniture.
Bridgman has selected the best two timbers for outdoor furniture, Teak and Iroko. Both timbers have excellent characteristics when used outside and are rated as very durable by the UK Timber Research Association. All the wood we use is carefully selected, properly kiln dried and from completely legal and reputable sources.
Teak Park benches are traditional in style and manufacture and are normally supplied fully assembled. They are available in three sizes and will grace any home, club or place where pleasant and substantial seating is required. Genuine Teak (tectona grandis) is the premier timber for outdoor furniture.
Teak combines its beautiful appearance with a strength and durability that is unequalled by any other timber. Teak has a close grain and a naturally high oil content that makes it both stable and resistant to rot. Much of the construction is carried out using traditional methods; enhanced with the advantage of modern manufacturing techniques.
Tudor benches have been made in Iroko and supplied by Bridgman for many years and are one of the most popular benches that Bridgman has ever produced. The shaped backs are especially styled to give extra comfort. Two sizes are available and are normally supplied for easy home assembly. Iroko is a high quality hardwood from West Africa (chlorophora excelsa).
Bridgman has selected this timber specifically for its excellent qualities as it is able to withstand the rigours of an outdoor environment, of which very few other timbers are capable. Iroko is naturally resilient to changes in climate and has excellent strength properties, as a result of which it is used extensively in exterior work including marine uses.
Engravings on brass plaques or inscriptions carved directly into the rail of the bench can be supplied for all benches as required.
All our wooden furniture leaves the factory untreated. Dependent on personal taste, a prompt decision needs to be made whether or not to treat the furniture with any kind of wood finish.
To maintain a more original appearance the furniture should be treated with a suitable product for smooth hardwoods, carefully following the manufacturer's instructions. It is not necessary to treat the wood to preserve it, although treating the wood is likely to reduce the amount of end grain cracking and distortion that may occur over time.
Left untreated the wood will gradually turn an attractive silver grey colour. Small cracks may appear, but these are perfectly normal characteristics and will not affect the strength or durability of the timber.
Whether treated or not it is advisable to regularly clean the furniture with a scrubbing brush and warm water to help keep the wood from becoming dirty from being left constantly outside. Please note that there is nothing in the timber that can discolour the surface.
