12th - 20th January - London Boat Show
For the boating enthusiast, there is no better place to see (and try) the newest boats and equipment than the London Boat Show. Visitors can talk to top experts about powerboats, yachts, sailboats, and anything else about being on the water. Workshops, exhibitors, activities, competitions, and vendors make Europe’s first boat show a great boating event. At Excel, the ideal starting point for exploring London.
9th February – 3rd March - Orchids at Kew
Stunning displays of orchids grace the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Kew Gardens in a celebration of the beauty and drama of orchids. The colourful orchid displays liven up the winter months and provide a romantic backdrop to Valentine’s Day events at Kew. Orchid growers and enthusiasts from around the world attend this annual event of the Royal Horticultural Society.
29th March – 1st April - Easter in London with Boat Race
Easter in London is family time, with egg hunts, costumed strolls, religious events, and the Boat Race. Started in 1829, the Easter Boat Race is an annual contest between rowing crews from Oxford and Cambridge. It attracts a quarter of a million spectators to the banks of the River Thames. The 4.25-mile race, which takes place 31st March this year, runs from Putney Bridge to Mortlake and takes 16-18 minutes to complete. Other Easter events take place in locations around the city.
21st April - London Marathon
The London Marathon is the world’s largest marathon; over 36,000 people finished the race in 2012. Just over 26 miles long, the course is set around the River Thames, with three separate starting points in Greenwich Park. The finish line, with all its tension and excitement, is at the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. Every year the race is a huge sporting celebration and charity fundraiser.
21st - 25th May - Chelsea Flower Show
2013 marks the hundredth anniversary of the Chelsea Flower Show, the foremost annual event for seasoned and novice gardeners alike. Spectacular show gardens, small demonstration gardens, and educational horticultural displays transform the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea into a gardener’s paradise and source of inspiration. Each year sees the introduction of new plants and the revival of heirloom varieties. The first two days are for members only.
9th - 14th July – Hampton Court Palace Flower Show
Set in the grounds of Henry VIII’s villa, the Hampton Court Flower Show is the world’s largest annual flower show. Known for its friendly approach to horticulture, the 6-day event is a great opportunity to see magnificent show gardens and brush up on your gardening skills. Tuesday and Wednesday are members-only days.
27th - 28th August - Notting Hill Carnival
The Notting Hill Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe. Every August Bank Holiday since 1996 West London comes alive with the food, music, and costumes of Afro-Caribbean cultures. Carnival Bands parade through the streets from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on both days of the festival. Over one million people attend the two-day event each year. Sunday is the day for children and families and Monday is adult’s day.
