As we welcome in the lighter evenings and warmer temperatures (fingers crossed!), there’s no better time to give your home a seasonal refresh. So be inspired by our top five trends this season and fall in love with your home all over again…
1 Big up with blue
If there’s one colour we should be filling our homes with this season, then it has to be blue. Yes, glorious blue in all it’s guises – from rich, moody indigo through to vibrant turquoise, smart denim and pretty cornflower- is the current colour crush for every well-heeled interiorista. Block out one wall with a power-packed cobalt blue paint or simply dip your toe in the trend with breezy, coastal-inspired blue-and-white accessories for an instant refresh. And don’t forget to take the look outdoors too with our San Marino stacking chairs in the softest baby blue.
2 Warm up your metallics
Our love affair with cool, white metals like stainless steel, chrome and silver has taken a serious nosedive as warmer metallics in pinkish hues (try copper, rose gold and brass for starters) are flying high on the interiors wishlist. Forget any notions of olde-worlde, wall hangings and rustic plates, we’re talking sculptural, rose gold taps to pep up an all-white kitchen or bathroom (yes, you heard right, the gold tap is back in fashion), beautiful, handbeaten brass vessels and warm panels of copper or lengths of copper pipe used in imaginative ways. Warming up your home for summer has never been so easy…
3 Flower power
Our love of all things floral has taken a gutsier stance this spring/summer and our homes need to get ready for an invasion of big, blowsy tropical blooms. Transform your room with by covering an armchair in a hothouse flower fabric mixing up a clash of fuchsia, tangerine and acid yellow. For something less permanent, liven up a sofa or bed with a pile of beautiful tropical-print cushions, then lie back and dream of paradise islands. This is florals for the bravehearted…shrinking violets need not apply.
4 Mix and match kitchens
Okay, for this trend you’ll need time and cash on your side, but in the long run, you’ll have it for years to come (and be totally ahead of the fash-pack right now). We’re talking mix-and-match kitchens where different colours, materials and textures are taking over from all-over colour or floor-to-ceiling timber. Tips to steal include contrasting a bright glossy white wall unit with a matt wood veneer on the bottom half or painting an island unit in a striking accent shade (try deep ruby red or a pale vintage green) to make your kitchen stand out from the crowd. Don’t go overboard with too many variations and instead stick to two or three materials and seek advice from a kitchen designer. If you haven’t got the budget for a complete kitchen overhaul this spring/summer, try honing down the trend with mix-and-match dining chairs in a line-up of different colours, styles or eras for a fabulously, eclectic look.
5 Wall-to-wall wallpaper
Feature walls have had their day, and instead, wall-to-wall wallpaper – that’s patterned paper on every single wall, and sometimes the ceiling, eek! – is looking fresh, exciting and bang on the money for our interiors this season. If you’re feeling a slight trepidation with this one, experiment in the cloakroom, where you’ll create instant drama and impact and if the wallpaper is pricey, you won’t need to shell out on so many rolls. With so many different patterns, prints, colours and designs to choose from these days, the only real problem you’ll have to face, is deciding which one to pick…
