How to tackle the Big Spring Clean

While National Spring Cleaning Week may have come and gone (sigh, what a shame…), there’s still plenty of time to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in to the annual Big Spring Clean. Because with spring officially here, there’s no better time to get your home looking clean and shiny and spick and span to show off all your interior treasures and prized pieces (minus the layer of dust, that is).

If (like me) you dread the very thought of all that mopping, dusting and decluttering, don’t worry, you’re certainly not alone. According to a survey of 2,000 adults*, we’re a grubby lot at heart and one in 10 of us admit to reusing unwashed crockery and cleaning skirting boards with socks…whilst wearing them (I do like that one!). Not only that, some of us are more likely to buy new bed sheets rather than wash the old ones, and possibly the top dirtiest cleaning confession of all, is letting the dog lick the leftovers from our plates. Eeeww!

Enough is enough. Luckily the shops are filled with a tempting array of cleaning tools and hardworking lotions and potions that won’t do the job for you, but might just ease the pain of all that elbow grease. Cath Kidston’s flowery dusters, pretty peg bags and underbed storage (I love the latest cloud print) are sure to shift us into action while supermarkets are stacked to the rafters with good looking washing-up brushes, bowls, laundry hampers and sweet-smelling liquids to put us in the mood for cleaning.

The key is to set goals and tackle one room at a time and don’t move on to the next, until it’s done. Equip yourself with stacks of storage bags, boxes and caddies in a variety of shapes, sizes and materials to make sure there’s a place for everything and everything in its place, as the saying goes. And don’t hang on to stuff for sentimental sake or otherwise (do you really need all of those old University exam papers and Christmas pressie receipts from a decade ago?). Be prepared for a few runs to the charity shop or load up for a car boot sale if you fancy earning yourself an extra few quid while you’re at it.

clean-home-william-morris When it comes to cleaning, there’s a product to suit every job, from glass spray to shower cleaner,  wood polish, air freshener, bleach and power foams and everything else in between. I’m an old-fashioned type of girl and I still can’t get enough of Zoflora: the mini bottles of concentrated disinfectant banish grubby floors and worktops and leave your home smelling gorgeous (and I bet you didn’t know its scents are developed with the International Flavours and Fragrances organisation, the same experts who help Estee Lauder and Clinique with its perfumes?). However, my current cleaning crush has to be Method and its eco-friendly, rainbow-coloured range of liquids and sprays that don’t contain any chemical nasties and leave your home smelling like coconut, pink grapefruit and French lavender (they don’t look half bad left on the counter too).

If it all still sounds like a little too much hard work, then why not cheat? Light one of Yankee Candle’s scented votives (Lemon Lavender and Clean Cotton will do the job nicely), put your feet up and enjoy a cuppa. Now isn’t that better…
