With new advances in the garden furniture industry over the past few years maintenance of quality garden furniture is easier than ever.
In this post I will cover the basics on how to keep your teak, metal and rattan garden furniture looking its best for years.
Teak Garden Furniture Care
When purchasing teak furniture you are presented with a choice; to treat it with teak treatment or varnish, or to leave it to naturally weather. It is best to make this decision before placing the furniture outside, and to keep to the course of action that has been decided upon.
Treating garden furniture when brand new:
To help maintain a more original appearance, the furniture should be treated with an application of Bridgman treatment, or any other suitable product, always carefully following the manufactuers’ instructions. The treatment should first be applied on a part of the furniture that is not easily visible, to check that it satisfies the customers colour requirements.
It is not necessary to treat the wood to ‘preserve it’. Treating the timber simply slows down the weathering process. It will also help to reduce the amount of end grain cracking and possible warping that may occur over a period of time.
Leaving garden furniture untreated:
If left untreated, the furniture will gradually turn an attractive silver-grey colour, which is an oxidization of the surface. Small cracks may appear, especially on the end grain, but these are perfectly normal characteristics and will not affect the strength or durability of the timber. In hot, sunny and dry conditions, some cracks may appear larger, but these will normally reduce in cooler and wetter conditions.
Cleaning garden furniture:
In a modern environment the atmosphere contains many impurities, which will cause the furniture to become dirty. Fortunately the remedy is often quite simple. The furniture should be cleaned using either a scrubbing brush and warm slightly soapy water, or a jet wash. When using a jet wash, great care must be taken to ensure that the correct distance is maintained from the surface, to avoid possible damage to the furniture.
Re-treating the furniture:
When re-treating the furniture it is essential to first clean it to remove any dirt, using either a scrubbing brush and warm soapy water, or a jet wash. Bridgman Cleaner can be used to assist the cleaning process. Cleaning is absolutely necessary otherwise a new application of treatment will seal in any dirt or marks. When completely dry, lightly sand the surfaces. It is particularly important to sand off any weathered areas before treating.
Metal Garden Furniture Care
With reasonable use, aluminium furniture should give many years of trouble free service.
Surface dirt and airborne pollution can be removed with warm water and a sponge or soft brush. Do not use harsh abrasives or aggressive detergents as these can damage the paint finish on many sets.
It is also very simple to clean the seating fabric of aluminium garden furniture. Bridgman have developed a non foaming cleaner that has been specially designed to keep aluminium furniture looking its best for many years.
It is advisable to cover aluminium furniture over winter months, or to store it a shed or garage. Some higher quality sets can be folded or stacked in seconds for easy storage when not in use thus extending the convenience and life whilst keeping the furniture clean. Garden furniture covers can be purchased in various shapes and sizes, all with very reasonable price tags.
Rattan Garden Furniture Care
Rattan garden furniture is sometimes referred to as ‘all weather furniture’ and is a joy to maintain.
All Bridgman rattan furniture is made using aluminium frames and a synthetic wicker, and can remain outside all year. The high quality weaves used in the manufacture are UV resistant and tested between -40°C and +80°C. The use of these materials results in furniture that is completely maintenance free and ideal either inside or outside the home.
The only maintenance involved with rattan furniture is the need to wipe it down with a damp sponge or cloth to remove any dirt. Hoses are also effective, however it is not advisable to use a power jet wash unless on a very low setting.
Cushions should be stored in a dry place when not used to ensure years of use and comfort out of your furniture. Cushion storage can be bought by visiting www.Bridgman.co.uk
